Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkiye Sign New Defence Pact

Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkiye have signed a new defence pact, an agreement covering military and security cooperation between the three nations.

Defence analyst Alex Alfirraz Scheers has described the agreement as a sign of realignment, suggesting that traditional patterns of international partnership may be shifting.

For decades, the United States has occupied a central position in the security architecture of the Middle East and South Asia, serving as a key ally to numerous governments across both regions.

Scheers argues that the new trilateral pact could challenge this long-standing US role, potentially signalling that Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkiye are seeking greater strategic independence from Washington.

Each of the three countries brings substantial weight to the arrangement. Saudi Arabia remains one of the world's leading oil producers and a dominant force in Middle Eastern politics. Pakistan possesses a sizeable military, including nuclear capabilities, and has long played a significant security role in South Asia. Turkiye, straddling Europe and Asia, maintains a powerful armed forces and has been steadily expanding its regional influence.

By formalising their cooperation through this agreement, the three nations appear to be consolidating ties in defence and security, areas that have historically involved close cooperation with, or dependence on, the United States.

Analysts note that such moves reflect a broader pattern, with a number of countries increasingly seeking diversified partnerships rather than relying on a single dominant power for their strategic needs.

The precise details of the pact have not been fully disclosed, but its symbolic weight, according to Scheers, should not be underestimated. He suggests it points to a wider shift in global power structures, as middle powers increasingly assert their own strategic priorities.
