Huge Storm Hits Spain's Mediterranean Coast
A severe storm system unleashed extreme rainfall over Spain's Mediterranean coast this weekend, with emergency services reporting record-breaking totals.
According to Emergencias, Spain's emergency response agency, the storm dropped 600 litres of rain per square metre over the sea in a single hour. This figure represents three times the previous record, which had been set in the town of TurÃs on October 29, during an earlier extreme weather event, known locally as a DANA.
The Comunidad Valenciana region bore the brunt of the storm, as torrential downpours triggered flash floods and nearly a hundred separate incidents across the territory. Local infrastructure and communities faced significant disruption as the system moved through.
The scale of the storm's impact extended well beyond Valencia, with fifteen regions across Spain placed under weather warnings on Saturday, reflecting the storm's wide geographic reach.
Spain's national meteorological agency, Aemet, had earlier issued red alerts, its most serious warning category, for the provinces of Tarragona and Castellón, indicating a high risk to life and property from the extreme conditions.
Once the storm's intensity had passed its peak, Aemet subsequently lifted the red alerts affecting both provinces, signalling a reduction in the immediate danger, though lower-level warnings may have remained in place elsewhere.
Spanish news outlets have continued to provide rolling coverage of the storm's development, tracking its movement and effects across the affected regions throughout the day.
The event follows a pattern of increasingly intense autumn storms along Spain's eastern coast, where sudden, heavy rainfall has repeatedly caused flooding in recent years. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring conditions as the system fully clears the region.
