A powerful storm brought extreme rainfall to Spain's Mediterranean coast over the weekend, according to emergency services.

The Emergencias (Emergency Services) agency reported that 600 litres of rain per square metre fell in just one hour over the sea. This amount is three times the previous record, which was set in Turís on October 29.

The Valencia region, known locally as the Comunidad Valenciana, was especially hard hit. The storm caused flash floods and led to almost a hundred separate incidents across the area.

As the storm spread, fifteen Spanish regions were placed under weather warnings on Saturday, showing how widely the system affected the country.

Spain's national weather agency, Aemet, had issued red alerts, the highest level of warning, for the provinces of Tarragona and Castellón. A red alert is used only when extreme weather poses a serious risk to life.

Later, after the worst of the rainfall had passed, Aemet lifted these red alerts for both provinces.

Local news outlets have been providing live updates throughout the day as the storm continues to affect different parts of the country.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely, as further rain or flooding remains possible in the affected regions.
