French Left Party Unveils Budget Plan Ahead of 2027 Election
Listen to the story
The French left-wing party LFI, known as 'France Unbowed', has presented its budget plan ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The party says the plan will create 106 billion euros in extra government revenue.
Most of this new money would come from taxes. LFI wants 100 billion euros in additional taxes, mainly aimed at wealthy people and large companies.
The party also wants to launch a large economic recovery plan. This means the government would spend a lot of money to help businesses and workers.
LFI politician Éric Coquerel explained the thinking behind the plan. He said that almost every part of the French economy is struggling right now.
However, he pointed out one exception: dividends. These are payments companies make to their shareholders, and they have continued to grow even as other areas face problems.
Coquerel believes the government should take some of this money through taxes. He wants to use it to support the wider economy instead.
This approach is very different from the policies of former president Emmanuel Macron. LFI's candidate, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, hopes this plan will mark a clear break from the Macron era.
Supporters call this a 'counter-budget', meaning it offers a clear alternative to the government's usual spending plans. Critics may argue that such high taxes could hurt businesses.
The 2027 presidential race is still more than a year away, but parties are already presenting their economic ideas to voters.
