Rakuten Travel Opens Bookings for Kyushu Recovery Discount

Rakuten Travel, one of Japan's leading online travel agencies, opened bookings on September 25 for the "Kyushu Recovery Discount," a subsidy program designed to support tourism in parts of southern Japan affected by recent difficulties.

The discount became available for Miyazaki and Oita prefectures through the platform starting that day.

Saga prefecture also joined the initiative, opening its own reservation window later the same day at 12 p.m., separately from the two other regions.

Fukuoka prefecture likewise began accepting bookings under the same program, though the rollout there proved more complicated.

As of the report, major travel booking platforms including Jalan and Rakuten Travel had not yet activated reservations for Fukuoka's portion of the discount.

On the opening day, Fukuoka's prefectural office was reportedly overwhelmed with phone calls, with staff describing the lines as "ringing nonstop."

Some confusion arose as residents and travelers had to wait for the prefecture to finish its administrative procedures before bookings could proceed smoothly.

In response, the Fukuoka prefectural government stated that online reservations through booking sites would begin "once preparations are complete," without giving a specific date.

The Kyushu Recovery Discount appears to be a regional initiative aimed at encouraging travel to Kyushu, an island made up of several prefectures in southern Japan, including Fukuoka, Saga, Oita and Miyazaki.

While the program's full terms, such as discount amounts or eligibility, were not detailed in available reports, the staggered rollout across different prefectures and platforms suggests a coordinated but uneven rollout process.

The high demand seen in Fukuoka, reflected in the flood of phone inquiries, indicates strong public interest in the discount scheme from its very first day.

It remains to be seen how quickly Fukuoka's booking system will be fully operational and whether similar demand will be seen in other participating prefectures as reservations continue to open.
