Listen to the story

Brazilian surfer Miguel Pupo has won the California stage of the surfing World Surf League (WSL) after reaching the final at Trestles, a well-known surf break used in the competition.

The result came despite the early elimination of two other prominent Brazilian surfers, Gabriel Medina and Filipe Toledo, both of whom were knocked out in the second round of the event.

While his compatriots exited early, Pupo advanced steadily through the rounds, eventually reaching the final heat of the stage.

In that decisive match, Pupo trailed his opponent for much of the heat, appearing at one point to be heading towards defeat.

However, in a dramatic turnaround in the closing moments of the heat, he managed to post a higher score than his rival.

This late surge secured him victory in the final and confirmed his status as champion of the Trestles stage.

The win represents a significant achievement for Pupo, who competes on the elite circuit of professional surfing alongside other top athletes from around the world.

The WSL World Tour features a series of stages held at various surf breaks internationally, with results contributing to each surfer's position in the world rankings.

Although Medina and Toledo, both former world champions, were eliminated earlier than expected, Pupo's title run demonstrated the continued strength of Brazilian surfing on the global stage.

His performance at Trestles is likely to boost his standing in the overall world rankings as the season progresses.
