Listen to the story

New opinion polls suggest difficult times ahead for Spain's left-wing parties. According to these polls, left-wing parties could lose parliamentary seats in 29 provinces across Spain in an upcoming general election.

Meanwhile, right-wing parties could become the leading political force in around 80% of Spanish provinces, the polls indicate. This would represent a significant shift in the country's political map.

The survey data comes from two research organisations, CIS and GAD3, which regularly measure public opinion on Spanish politics. Their polls looked at support for major parties, including PSOE, PP, VOX, and Frente Amplio.

A key factor behind the left's possible losses is internal fracture, or division, within left-wing politics. According to the polls, this split could cost the left-wing coalition Sumar as many as 22 seats.

At the same time, the division on the left could benefit parties on the right. The polls suggest PP and Vox together could gain up to 15 additional seats as a result.

These projections remain estimates based on survey data, not final results. Polls can change before any real vote takes place, and actual election outcomes may differ from current predictions.

Still, the figures point to a notable pattern: internal division on the political left appears to be creating opportunities for right-wing parties to expand their support across much of Spain.
