Spain's Ombudsman Challenges Suspension of Vote for "Grandchildren's Law" Citizens
Listen to the story
Spain's Defensor del Pueblo, the official who protects citizens' rights, has filed an appeal with the Constitutional Court. The goal is to lift a suspension affecting the voting rights of people who became Spanish citizens under the "ley de nietos", a law granting nationality to grandchildren of Spaniards.
The appeal, known as a recurso de amparo, asks the court to overturn a decision that stopped these new citizens from voting in upcoming elections. The suspension was ordered by Spain's Supreme Court.
According to reports, the issue was also discussed at the Junta Electoral, the body responsible for overseeing elections in Spain. During this debate, some members raised concerns about a wider impact. They worried that the suspension could threaten the voting rights of all Spaniards registered to vote from abroad, not only those affected by the "ley de nietos".
The "ley de nietos" has allowed many descendants of Spanish emigrants to obtain Spanish nationality in recent years. This has significantly increased the number of citizens living outside Spain who are eligible to vote in Spanish elections.
The Defensor del Pueblo's move signals disagreement with the Supreme Court's decision and aims to protect the voting rights of those affected before the next elections take place. The Constitutional Court will now need to decide whether to accept the appeal and review the case.
