Ration Card e-KYC: Complete It at Home with a Mobile App

India's food department has announced that all ration card holders must complete e-KYC verification by September 30. e-KYC, or electronic Know Your Customer, is a way to confirm a person's identity using digital tools. This process can now be finished at home using a mobile application, meaning people do not need to visit a government office.

The rule applies to both BPL (Below Poverty Line) and APL (Above Poverty Line) card holders. According to the announcement, every single member listed on a ration card must complete e-KYC, not only the head of the family. This makes the process compulsory for large households.

The food department has set a clear deadline of September 30 for the e-KYC process. Card holders who miss this date could face problems accessing their ration benefits, though exact consequences were not detailed in the announcement.

To complete e-KYC through the app, users must go through a fingerprint scan to confirm their identity. However, the department noted that fingerprint scans do not always work correctly. In such cases, people are advised to update their Aadhaar details first. Aadhaar is India's national identity system, and keeping it updated can help the scan succeed on a later attempt.

This move is part of a wider push to bring government services online and make identity verification more convenient for citizens. By allowing e-KYC through a mobile app, the food department hopes to reduce the need for in-person visits, which can be time-consuming for families, especially those in rural areas.
