Karnataka Declares Drought in 101 Talukas

The Karnataka government has officially declared drought in 101 talukas across the state. A taluka is a small administrative area within a district.

Among the affected areas are four talukas in Ballari district, which is known for its mining industry. Officials say around 29,000 hectares of crops have been destroyed there because of the lack of rain.

A hectare is a unit used to measure land area, and losing crops on such a large scale can seriously hurt local farmers' income.

Following the announcement, the BJP, one of India's major political parties, has criticized the government's response. The party says the support offered is not enough for struggling farmers.

BJP leaders are demanding a loan waiver for farmers, meaning the cancellation of debts they owe. They want this waiver to cover loans up to 1 lakh rupees, which equals 100,000 rupees.

Many farmers in drought-hit areas had taken loans to buy seeds, fertilizer, and equipment for farming. With their crops destroyed, they now face difficulty repaying these loans.

The compensation the government provides for drought damage has not been detailed fully in current reports. It remains unclear whether the government will accept the BJP's demand for a full loan waiver.

Drought declarations like this one usually lead to government relief measures, such as financial aid or reduced work requirements under employment schemes. However, opposition parties often argue that such measures do not go far enough to help farmers recover fully.
