Listen to the story

Italian food authorities have issued a recall for eggs and blueberry jam because of possible Salmonella contamination.

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause food poisoning. It often comes from eggs, meat, or unwashed vegetables.

In total, 18 batches of eggs have been recalled. A batch is a group of products made at the same time.

Some of these egg batches had already passed their expiry date, meaning they should not have been sold anyway.

A separate alert was also announced for a batch of blueberry jam, which may also contain Salmonella.

Authorities have published the exact batch numbers for both the eggs and the jam. People are asked to check these numbers on their own products.

If a product matches the recalled batch, people should not eat it. It should be returned to the shop or thrown away.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection can include stomach pain, fever, and vomiting. Most healthy adults recover within a few days.

However, children, elderly people, and those with weak immune systems can become more seriously ill.

Food safety officials often issue recalls like this one when routine testing finds a possible health risk. The goal is to stop contaminated products from reaching more consumers.
