Delhi Enforces GRAP-2 Rules to Fight Winter Pollution
Listen to the story
Delhi-NCR has enforced GRAP-2, a set of pollution control rules, starting 2 November 2026. The measures aim to reduce the city's rising winter smog.
Under the new phase, parking charges will increase sharply, and timings at government offices will be adjusted. Officials say these changes are meant to reduce traffic and emissions.
On the very first day of the Winter Action Plan, authorities collected fines worth โน68.4 lakh from vehicles that broke pollution rules. This shows how strictly the plan is being enforced.
More than 1,500 vehicles were turned back at Delhi's borders because they did not meet the required pollution standards. This is part of efforts to stop extra polluting vehicles from entering the city.
Delhi faces serious air quality problems every winter, caused by vehicle emissions, construction dust, and smoke from nearby states. GRAP, or the Graded Response Action Plan, is activated in stages depending on how bad the air becomes.
GRAP-2 is the second stage and includes stricter controls than the earlier stage. It usually involves actions like banning the use of diesel generators and increasing public transport frequency.
The Winter Action Plan is a wider government strategy that includes many steps to fight pollution through the cold months, when air quality usually drops the most in Delhi-NCR.
