Listen to the story

The Brazilian government has announced a new support program for small business owners called MEIs. MEI stands for Microempreendedor Individual, a legal status for people who run very small businesses on their own.

The program, named Prospera MEI, will offer several kinds of help to these business owners. It includes debt forgiveness, support to pay off bank loans, and direct money support.

Under the plan, the government will forgive certain tax debts that MEIs owe. This means these business owners will no longer need to pay back this money.

The government will also buy bank debts owed by MEIs. This step is meant to reduce the financial pressure that small business owners face from banks.

In addition, MEIs will be able to receive up to 5,000 reais through Pix, Brazil's fast digital payment system. This money is meant to help them invest in their businesses.

The announcement was made as part of a larger package of support measures introduced by President Lula ahead of the second round of Brazil's elections.

The package also includes other benefits, such as the Pé-de-Meia education program, which has been expanded alongside the new MEI support.

These measures are seen as an effort to help small business owners who often struggle with debt and limited access to credit. By combining debt relief with direct financial support, the government hopes to make it easier for MEIs to keep their businesses running and growing.
