Listen to the story

Seventy-two bets have shared a huge jackpot of R$300 million in Brazil's Lotofácil da Independência lottery.

The special draw is part of the 2026 edition of Lotofácil, one of Brazil's most popular lottery games.

Among the winners were groups of players from the state of Ceará, who joined together in a bolão.

A bolão lets several people combine their money to buy one bigger bet, increasing their chance of winning.

Each player buys a small share, called a cota, of the total bet.

In this case, some winners in Ceará paid up to R$2,930 for their cota in the group bet.

Since the total prize was shared between 72 winning bets, each one received a large sum of money.

Besides the special Independence draw, Lotofácil also holds regular weekly draws.

This week's normal draw, numbered 3781, also took place on Wednesday the 16th.

In that draw, players check the numbers picked to see if they have matched enough digits to win a prize.

Lotofácil is known for having many winners because players only need to guess 15 numbers out of 25 possible options.

This makes it easier to win smaller prizes compared to other lottery games in Brazil.

The Lotofácil da Independência draw is a special yearly event with a much bigger prize than normal draws.

It usually takes place around Brazil's Independence Day celebrations in September.
