Authorities have issued a new yellow weather alert for the entire Campania region in southern Italy, valid from 13:00 to 20:00 on Wednesday, August 12. The warning follows a period of severe and unpredictable weather across the region.

A yellow alert indicates a moderate risk of adverse weather conditions, typically including strong winds, heavy rain, or localized storms. While it is not the most severe classification, residents and travelers are urged to remain cautious, particularly along the coastline.

The alert comes shortly after a waterspout—a rotating column of air extending from a storm cloud down to the surface of the water—formed over the Gulf of Naples. Such phenomena, while relatively rare, can pose significant risks to vessels operating in coastal waters.

During the storm, two hydrofoils reportedly came dangerously close to colliding near the Beverello port, one of Naples' busiest maritime hubs and a key departure point for ferries to islands such as Capri and Ischia. The near-collision caused considerable alarm among passengers aboard the vessels.

Hydrofoils, which use underwater wings to lift their hulls above the water at speed, are widely used for fast passenger transport in the Bay of Naples. Sudden weather disturbances can severely affect their stability and maneuverability, increasing the risk of accidents in crowded ports.
