US Media: Japanese Star Oda Shoki May Sign With Dodgers
Listen to the story
American media have reported that Shoki Oda, a promising young Japanese baseball player, could eventually sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers, in a contract potentially worth up to around 780 million yen.
According to the reports, such a large sum for a player at this stage of his career highlights the growing financial pull of Major League Baseball on top Japanese talent.
US commentators reportedly described the situation as a sign that Japanese baseball is facing what they called a crisis for its future, warning that more young stars may choose to leave for the United States rather than stay in Japan's domestic leagues.
Part of the speculation centres on Oda's admiration for Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Japanese pitcher who currently plays for the Dodgers and is considered one of the league's standout performers.
Oda has reportedly named Yamamoto as a player he looks up to, which has fuelled talk that the Dodgers could be a natural destination for him.
The news comes after the Yomiuri Giants used an aggressive, high-priority pick to select Oda in Japan's professional baseball draft, a decision that has since drawn scrutiny.
Some reports suggest that Oda secretly travelled to the United States before the draft took place, and that he met with representatives from around ten Major League teams during the visit.
This has raised questions about whether Oda was already seriously considering a move abroad even as the Giants moved to secure his signature domestically.
Separately, in an evaluation of each Central League team's draft performance, Japanese sports media gave the Giants a score of 65 out of 100 for their decision to prioritise Oda despite the uncertainty surrounding his intentions.
By contrast, the Hanshin Tigers were noted for choosing to focus their draft strategy on securing an outfielder instead.
The developments have sparked wider debate in Japan about the long-term competitiveness of its domestic league, as more elite young players appear drawn toward opportunities in the United States.
No final decision on Oda's future has been confirmed, and it remains unclear whether he will ultimately join the Giants in Japan or pursue a move to Major League Baseball.
