The difficulty with baïnes lies partly in their unpredictability: the surface of the water can appear calm even as a strong undertow pulls beneath it, making it hard for swimmers to detect the danger until they are already caught in the current.

This latest incident in Mimizan highlights the recurring risks associated with the Atlantic coastline, a stretch of France that draws large numbers of holidaymakers each summer despite the well-documented dangers posed by these currents. Authorities are expected to maintain heightened vigilance throughout the remainder of the season.
