Storms and Heavy Rain Hit Several Parts of India
Listen to the story
India's weather department has issued alerts for multiple regions, warning of storms, heavy rain, and strong winds over the coming days. Fourteen districts in the central state of Madhya Pradesh are expected to experience thunderstorms accompanied by rainfall.
In southern India, Tamil Nadu continues to see persistent heavy rain, with the state capital, Chennai, recording intense downpours. Local authorities have placed the city on alert and are closely monitoring developments as rainfall continues.
In response to the ongoing weather conditions, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has conducted preparedness drills, testing its readiness to respond quickly should flooding or other emergencies arise.
Meanwhile, rainfall has also been reported in the Himalayan region, near the pilgrimage towns of Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Gangotri in Uttarakhand, raising concerns given the mountainous and often vulnerable terrain of these areas.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has additionally flagged early signs of a storm system developing over the sea. It has issued a separate alert for heavy rainfall in coastal areas, along with winds expected to reach speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour.
Such wind speeds can pose risks to fishing activity, coastal infrastructure, and travel, and authorities have urged residents in affected zones to remain cautious and follow official updates.
The combination of alerts across central, southern, and northern India reflects a broader pattern of unsettled weather affecting large parts of the country simultaneously. Officials continue to monitor the situation and have not ruled out further warnings as conditions evolve.
Residents in all flagged regions, particularly those near rivers, coastlines, and mountain routes, have been advised to stay informed and exercise caution during this period of active weather.
