Special Supermarket Hours in Spain for All Saints' Day
Listen to the story
Spain's major supermarket chains have announced special opening hours for the national holiday of All Saints' Day, which falls on Sunday, 1 November, as well as for the following day, Monday 2 November.
Mercadona, one of the country's largest retailers, has published adjusted schedules for both dates, reflecting the fact that many stores either close or shorten their hours on public holidays.
Other leading chains, including Lidl, Carrefour, Dia and Alcampo, have also confirmed modified timetables for 2 November, the day immediately following the holiday.
In Spain, opening rules on public holidays are not uniform nationwide. Each autonomous community has the authority to regulate which commercial establishments may remain open, leading to variations from one region to another.
As a result, a supermarket chain may operate under different hours in different cities, depending on local regulations governing holiday trading.
All Saints' Day holds particular cultural significance in Spain, as many families traditionally visit cemeteries to honour deceased relatives. The occasion is also associated with the purchase of flowers and traditional sweets.
This cultural context partly explains the adjusted retail schedules, as demand for certain goods tends to rise in the days surrounding the holiday.
Shoppers are being advised to verify opening times directly with individual stores, since schedules can differ not only between chains but also between branches of the same supermarket in different locations.
This situation recurs annually, as 1 November is consistently observed as a public holiday across Spain, prompting supermarkets to issue updated hours each year ahead of the date.
The adjustments mean that consumers planning holiday-related shopping, whether for food, flowers or other items, should check published timetables in advance to avoid disruption to their plans.
