Spain's Weather Agency Warns of Sudden Change: Storms and Falling Temperatures

Spain's national meteorological agency, AEMET, has issued a warning about a sudden and significant shift in weather conditions expected this week, describing it as a "sudden weather change."

The agency forecasts a sharp fall in maximum temperatures across much of the country, characterising the decrease as "notable or extraordinary" — language that indicates an unusually large drop for this time of year.

In addition to the temperature fall, AEMET has warned of storms expected to affect Spain between tomorrow and Friday. These storms are likely to bring heavy rainfall and potentially disruptive conditions in several regions.

Three Mediterranean autonomous communities are forecast to receive particularly intense rainfall, with accumulated totals exceeding 50 litres per square metre during the affected period. Such volumes can raise the risk of flash flooding in vulnerable areas.

AEMET has referred to the phenomenon as a "thermal collapse," a term describing an abrupt and pronounced fall in temperature over a short timeframe. According to the agency, this shift will effectively bring autumn conditions to Spain almost overnight, ending the summer-like weather that has persisted in recent weeks.

The sudden transition reflects a broader pattern often seen in early autumn, when contrasting air masses can trigger rapid and intense weather changes. Such events, while not uncommon, can pose challenges for infrastructure and public safety, particularly in regions prone to heavy rain.

Authorities have not specified exact temperature figures or the precise regions expected to see the largest drops, though the Mediterranean coast has been singled out as an area of particular concern due to the anticipated rainfall.

As the storms and temperature drop approach, residents — especially in the three affected Mediterranean communities — are being urged to monitor official updates from AEMET. Local authorities are also expected to issue guidance as the situation develops throughout the week.
