SpaceX's Future Value and a Lawsuit Over Elon Musk's AI Data Centers
Listen to the story
Elon Musk has predicted that SpaceX could eventually generate as much as $1 trillion in annual revenue, a figure that has prompted financial analysts to reassess what the company might be worth by 2027.
Revenue refers to the total money a company earns from its products and services before expenses are deducted. If Musk's forecast proves accurate, it would place SpaceX among the most valuable companies in history.
Reports examining this projection note that investors appear to be buying SpaceX, which trades under the ticker SPCX, for reasons beyond its traditional rocket-launch business. The company's broader ambitions, including satellite internet and future space ventures, are reportedly reshaping how the market views its potential.
Investors purchase shares, or small ownership stakes, in a company in the hope that its value will increase over time, allowing them to profit when they sell those shares later.
While SpaceX draws attention for its financial outlook, Musk's other company, xAI, is facing regulatory and legal scrutiny over its AI data centers in Memphis, Tennessee. These facilities house large numbers of computer servers that power artificial intelligence systems, which require substantial amounts of electricity to operate.
To supply that electricity, xAI has reportedly installed dozens of gas turbines at the Memphis site. These turbines burn natural gas to generate power but also emit methane, a potent greenhouse gas linked to air quality and climate concerns.
The US Environmental Protection Agency has now taken formal action against the Memphis data centers, citing pollution concerns tied to the turbine operations. The EPA is the federal agency responsible for enforcing environmental regulations across the country.
In addition to the EPA's involvement, xAI is facing a lawsuit alleging that it violated the Clean Air Act, longstanding federal legislation that sets limits on harmful emissions from industrial and commercial facilities. The legal action adds to growing scrutiny of the environmental footprint created by the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure, even as companies like xAI race to meet surging demand for computing power.
