Listen to the story

Russian forces have struck a key power plant in Kyiv using ballistic missiles, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said, in the latest attack on the country's energy infrastructure.

Zelensky stated that the strike had arrived with no early warning from Ukraine's international partners, raising questions about coordination between Kyiv and its Western allies on threat detection systems.

Ballistic missiles, which travel at extremely high speeds along an arched trajectory, are notoriously difficult for conventional air defence systems to intercept. Ukraine has previously relied on advanced Western-supplied systems, alongside intelligence sharing, to anticipate such attacks.

The targeting of power infrastructure has become a recurring feature of Russia's military campaign since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. Strikes on energy facilities have repeatedly caused blackouts across Ukrainian cities, disrupting heating, water supply and daily life, particularly during winter months.

Ukrainian officials have consistently characterised such strikes as deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure, arguing they serve no direct military purpose beyond inflicting hardship on the population. Moscow has previously defended similar strikes by framing energy facilities as legitimate military targets linked to Ukraine's war effort.

Zelensky's remarks about the absence of advance warning point to a potential gap in the early-detection network that Ukraine depends on, involving satellite data, radar tracking and intelligence cooperation with allied nations. Any lapse in this chain could leave critical infrastructure more vulnerable to sudden strikes.

No details have yet been released regarding casualties, the scale of damage to the plant, or how quickly power might be restored to affected areas. The incident is likely to renew debate among Ukraine's allies over the adequacy of current air defence support and information-sharing arrangements as the war continues.
