A public dispute has erupted within the French Socialist primary, the internal vote used by the left to choose a single candidate for a future election. Ségolène Royal, a veteran politician and current contender, sparked controversy after describing fellow candidate Raphaël Glucksmann as a "trainee", implying he lacked the experience needed for high office.

The remark drew a swift response from the primary's organising committee, which is tasked with ensuring the contest remains fair and civil. The committee reprimanded Royal, indicating that her comment crossed a line considered inappropriate for the campaign's tone.

Glucksmann himself did not let the comment pass unanswered. He countered by suggesting that Royal had spent her career actively "soliciting" political posts rather than earning them through merit, a pointed jab referencing her long history in government and regional politics.

Adding further friction to the race, another candidate, Sacha Houlié, accused Royal of having "ruined" the Poitou-Charentes region during her time as its president, implying that her past leadership left lasting damage to the area's governance or finances.

These exchanges highlight the escalating tension among candidates vying for leadership of the fractured French left. Rather than focusing on policy differences, the primary has increasingly become a stage for personal attacks and accusations of past failures.
