Red Lunar Eclipse Lights Up Arab Skies Before Dawn

A partial lunar eclipse illuminated the sky over parts of the Arab world in the early hours of Friday morning, appearing just before dawn.

The event caused the moon to take on a reddish hue, a phenomenon commonly referred to as a blood moon, which occurs when sunlight is filtered through Earth's atmosphere and cast onto the lunar surface as Earth's shadow moves across it.

Unlike a total lunar eclipse, in which the moon is entirely covered by Earth's umbra, a partial eclipse leaves part of the moon still exposed to direct sunlight, creating a striking contrast between the shadowed and illuminated sections.

The phenomenon was described as a rare celestial event, drawing attention across several countries for its scientific and visual significance.

In Egypt, the eclipse decorated the pre-dawn sky, giving observers a chance to witness the astronomical display before sunrise.

A similar view was reported in Yemen, where the eclipse was visible in the sky in the early hours of Friday.

Lunar eclipses occur only during a full moon, when the sun, Earth, and moon align closely enough for Earth's shadow to fall on the lunar surface. However, not every full moon results in an eclipse, since the moon's orbit is slightly tilted relative to Earth's.

The alignment required for such an event makes each occurrence a notable moment for both amateur sky watchers and astronomers, who often use eclipses to study the moon's surface and the behavior of light passing through Earth's atmosphere.

Although partial lunar eclipses are not exceptionally rare on a global scale, the timing and visibility of this particular event across multiple Arab countries added to public interest, prompting many people to rise before dawn to observe the reddish moon before it faded with the arrival of daylight.
