Pedro Acosta Fastest in First Practice at Austrian MotoGP
Listen to the story
Spanish rider Pedro Acosta set the fastest time in the opening free practice session of the Austrian MotoGP weekend, held at the Red Bull Ring on Thursday.
Acosta competes for KTM, the Austrian manufacturer whose home race takes place at this circuit, adding extra significance to a strong showing from the team.
Teammate Aleix Espargaró also produced a competitive time, with the pair's performances allowing KTM to demonstrate its pace on home soil during the first session of the weekend.
French rider Johann Zarco, a veteran of the MotoGP grid, rounded out the top five, continuing to show consistent form in the ongoing 2024 championship campaign.
Thursday also served as Media Day at the circuit, a traditional pre-event fixture during which riders and team representatives address journalists ahead of the race weekend's on-track sessions.
Free practice sessions such as this one give riders an opportunity to familiarise themselves with track conditions and fine-tune their setup ahead of qualifying and the race itself.
While early pace can offer clues about which riders and manufacturers may be competitive, times set in initial practice sessions do not always translate directly into results later in the weekend, as conditions and rider approaches can shift significantly.
KTM's strong start at its home Grand Prix will be closely watched by fans and rivals alike as the Austrian GP weekend progresses toward qualifying and the main race.
