Palio di Siena: Sunshine Returns for the Assunta Race

The Palio di Siena, one of Italy's oldest and most celebrated cultural traditions, is being held today in Siena's historic Piazza del Campo after earlier delays.

According to reports, the race scheduled for this year had faced postponements, with weather conditions likely playing a role in the disruption. Today, however, sunshine over the piazza has allowed organisers to proceed with the event as planned.

This particular running of the Palio is known as the Carriera dell'Assunta, the traditional August edition of the race held in honour of the Assumption of Mary. It is set to begin at 7 p.m. local time, drawing large crowds to the square.

Ten contrade, the historic districts into which Siena is divided, take part in the Palio, each fiercely representing its own colours and identity. The official pairings of horses and jockeys for this race, referred to as the accoppiate, have already been confirmed ahead of the start.

Coverage of the event will be available live on television, while additional live streaming options are also expected to be offered for those unable to attend in person.

Given the scale of the event and the large crowds it attracts, organisers have implemented tighter security protocols this year. Spectators entering the piazza will be subject to filtering checks designed to manage crowd flow and reduce risk.

In a notable addition, an anti-drone system has also been deployed, aimed at preventing unauthorised aerial devices from flying over the event, a measure that reflects growing concerns about safety and privacy at large public gatherings.

The Palio di Siena, with its centuries of history, continues to be a defining symbol of local identity, as each contrada competes not just for a trophy but for civic pride that runs deep within the city's cultural fabric.
