Nigerian Army Rescues 33 Kidnapped People

The Nigerian army has announced that it successfully rescued 33 people who were kidnapped by gunmen in the country's north-west.

The victims were abducted while travelling through Zamfara state on Saturday, according to the military. The army confirmed that all those rescued were unharmed, though it provided few further details about how the operation was conducted.

Zamfara state, located in north-western Nigeria, has become known as a hotspot for kidnappings carried out by armed groups locally referred to as bandits. These groups frequently target travellers on roads across the region, often holding victims for weeks or months.

Such groups typically demand ransom payments from families or communities before releasing their captives, a practice that has grown into a significant source of income for criminal networks operating in the area.

Kidnapping has become one of Nigeria's most persistent security challenges, particularly across its north-western and north-central regions, where weak governance and porous borders have allowed armed groups to operate with relative freedom.

The Nigerian military regularly conducts operations aimed at rescuing abducted civilians, though such missions can be complex and dangerous, given the rugged terrain and the mobility of the armed groups involved.

It remains unclear whether any suspects were arrested during this particular operation, and local authorities have yet to release additional information on the case.
