New Weather System to Bring Heavy Rain to 21 Indian States

India's India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather alert, warning that a new weather system developing over the region is expected to bring heavy rainfall to 21 states within the next 18 hours.

The forecast includes warnings of thunderstorms, strong winds reaching speeds of up to 75 kilometers per hour, and lightning strikes across several regions. Authorities have urged residents in the affected states to remain cautious, particularly during periods of intense lightning activity.

States expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall include Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha. Meanwhile, the monsoon, India's primary rainy season that typically lasts from June to September, has weakened in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) in recent days.

According to the IMD, the fresh spell of rainfall is linked to a developing low-pressure system, which refers to a region of the atmosphere where air pressure is lower than its surroundings, often triggering rain and stormy conditions. Such systems frequently form during the monsoon season and can significantly influence rainfall patterns across the Indian subcontinent.

While large parts of central and eastern India brace for intense rain and gusty winds, the slowdown of monsoon activity in Delhi-NCR highlights the uneven distribution of rainfall that often characterizes India's monsoon season.

The IMD has continued to release regular updates as the situation develops, advising residents in high-risk areas to avoid open spaces, tall trees, and water bodies during thunderstorms to reduce the risk of lightning-related injuries.

Authorities have also cautioned that continued heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding and disruption to transport in some of the more vulnerable regions, though no specific damage or casualty figures have been reported so far.
