New Storm to Bring Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms to Italy

Italy is bracing for a new and intense weather disturbance expected to strike at the beginning of the week, bringing widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall to multiple regions of the country. Meteorologists have identified several areas particularly exposed to the risk of severe storms and flash flooding.

The warning comes after a turbulent 24-hour period in which unstable weather already caused significant disruption. Firefighters carried out more than 1,200 interventions across central and northern Italy, responding to emergencies linked to flooding, fallen trees, and structural damage caused by the heavy rain.

Among the most serious incidents, a landslide fell onto the carriageway of the Statale 1 highway in Finale Ligure, in the Liguria region, forcing authorities to close the road entirely. The closure has caused significant traffic disruption in the coastal area, with local officials working to assess the damage and determine when the route can reopen safely.

Separately, national weather services have issued a yellow alert — the lowest of Italy's three-tier warning system — for Saturday, August 22, citing the risk of thunderstorms in numerous regions. Although classified as the mildest level of alert, yellow warnings still indicate a genuine potential for localised flooding, strong winds, and hail, particularly given the intensity of recent storms.

The recurring pattern of sudden, violent downpours, referred to in Italy as 'nubifragi', has become increasingly common in recent weeks, raising concerns among civil protection authorities about the strain such events place on emergency response systems. These intense rain events can deliver large volumes of water in a very short time, overwhelming drainage systems and triggering rapid, localised flooding.

Authorities have urged residents in the affected regions to remain alert to official updates and to avoid unnecessary travel during the peak of the storms. As the new disturbance approaches, weather services are continuing to monitor its development and will issue further updates on the areas most at risk of severe convective activity in the coming days.
