Madrid Court Orders Investigation into Begoña Gómez's Complaint Against Vito Quiles
Listen to the story
The Audiencia de Madrid, the provincial appeals court for the Spanish capital, has upheld an appeal filed by Begoña Gómez, wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, ordering that her complaint against commentator Vito Quiles be formally investigated.
Gómez had accused Quiles of coercion, a legal term describing the use of threats or pressure to force someone to act, or refrain from acting, against their will. Her complaint had initially been dismissed by a lower court, which found insufficient grounds to proceed.
Dissatisfied with that outcome, Gómez's legal team lodged an appeal with the Audiencia de Madrid, asking the higher court to review the lower court's reasoning and reopen the case.
In its ruling, the Audiencia de Madrid has now overturned the dismissal, concluding that the allegations warrant a full judicial investigation rather than a premature closure.
The decision arrives against the backdrop of a separate, related legal dispute in which Gómez herself faces an accusation of filing a false complaint against Quiles. According to reports, the court's latest ruling is viewed as favourable to Gómez's position, since it lends credibility to her original claim rather than undermining it.
Spanish media have characterised the outcome as a significant reprieve for Gómez, noting that the parallel case alleging a false complaint against her appears to have lost momentum as a result of this ruling.
The matter now returns to the lower court, known as the instructing court, which is responsible for gathering evidence and determining whether Quiles's conduct amounted to criminal coercion under Spanish law.
No verdict has yet been issued regarding the substance of Gómez's allegations. The investigation phase will establish whether sufficient evidence exists to bring formal charges against Quiles, a process that could take considerable time depending on the complexity of the case.
The case has drawn public attention partly because of Gómez's high profile as the spouse of the sitting prime minister, and because it intersects with broader political and media controversies involving Quiles, a right-wing commentator known for his confrontational public appearances.
