Mélenchon Defends Two LFI Politicians, Cites "Racism"

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the leader of France's left-wing party La France Insoumise (LFI), has accused sections of the French media of systemic racism after criticism was directed at two Black members of his party.

Mélenchon named Bally Bagayoko and Aly Diouara, arguing that being both Black and affiliated with LFI is, in his words, 'too much' for what he called 'media supremacists.'

His comments come as a broader controversy unfolds over suspected fictitious employment at the RATP, the public transport operator for the Paris region, where Bagayoko previously worked as an agent.

According to reports, several elected officials in the Val-d'Oise département had professional contact with Bagayoko during his time at the company, and journalists are now scrutinising whether his position there involved genuine duties or amounted to a paid arrangement without real work.

The affair has placed additional pressure on LFI, which has increasingly clashed with parts of the press over allegations of bias in its coverage of the party and its members.

Adding to the tension, a separate controversy has emerged concerning another LFI mayor, which Mélenchon says has further fuelled his anger at what he perceives as disproportionate media scrutiny of his party's Black elected officials.

Mélenchon has not detailed the specifics of this new mayoral case but has used it, alongside the RATP affair, to reinforce his argument that LFI figures from ethnic minorities face harsher treatment than their peers.

His remarks are likely to intensify an already fraught relationship between LFI and mainstream French outlets, with the party's leadership frequently accusing journalists of unfair or discriminatory reporting practices.

Neither RATP nor the journalists covering the employment allegations have issued a public response to Mélenchon's comments so far, and it remains unclear whether the claims regarding Bagayoko's role at the company will lead to any formal investigation.

The controversy underscores the recurring debate in France over how race intersects with political and media coverage, a subject Mélenchon has raised on previous occasions when defending party colleagues from criticism.
