Japanese Baseball Stars Remember Legend Harimoto Isao

Former professional baseball player Ochiai Hiromitsu has publicly paid tribute to Harimoto Isao, a legendary hitter in Japanese baseball history, following news of Harimoto's death.

Ochiai described Harimoto as someone who possessed sharp judgment, strong decisiveness, and the drive to follow through on his decisions. He referred to him as a "manly" senior figure whom he deeply respected within the baseball world.

Nakahata Kiyoshi, another former player, echoed similar sentiments during an appearance on the television program "Sunday Morning." He described Harimoto as a senior figure he greatly admired, calling him someone he loved dearly.

Meanwhile, Matsui Hideki, one of Japan's most celebrated baseball players, recalled a formative experience from his rookie season, which came immediately after he had graduated from high school. During that period, Harimoto served as his coach and offered guidance on his playing technique.

Matsui candidly admitted that he had, at times, resisted Harimoto's instruction. Specifically, Harimoto had encouraged him to adopt the "no-step" batting method, a distinctive hitting style in which a player avoids stepping forward before swinging. Despite this advice, Matsui ultimately chose not to incorporate the technique into his own approach at the plate.

The remarks from Ochiai, Nakahata, and Matsui collectively highlight the significant influence Harimoto had on generations of Japanese baseball players. As a coach and mentor, he was known not only for his own accomplishments as a hitter but also for the strong impressions he left on those he trained and worked alongside.
