Japanese Baseball Star Hari Isao Remembered by Former Players

Tributes have poured in from across Japan's baseball world following the death of legendary player Hari Isao, with several former stars recalling his influence both on and off the field.

Ochiai Hiromitsu, one of Japan's most respected former players, praised Hari's character, describing him as a man who could distinguish clearly between moments to relax and moments to focus. Ochiai also emphasised Hari's decisiveness and his ability to follow through on his decisions, calling him a truly 'manly' senior figure in the sport.

Nakahata Kiyoshi, a former player who now appears as a commentator on the television programme 'Sunday Morning', also paid tribute to Hari. He described him simply as a senior he had deeply admired.

Meanwhile, Matsui Hideki, one of Japan's best-known baseball exports, shared a more personal memory involving Hari's coaching. During Matsui's first professional season, having joined straight after high school, Hari attempted to influence his hitting approach.

Specifically, Hari encouraged Matsui to adopt a 'no-step' batting method, a technique in which the batter avoids shifting his front foot before swinging, a style Hari himself had famously used throughout his own playing career.

However, Matsui has revealed that, as a young and inexperienced player at the time, he resisted Hari's guidance rather than accepting it. As a result, he never incorporated the no-step technique into his own game, choosing instead to develop his own hitting style.

The recollections shared by Ochiai, Nakahata and Matsui together paint a picture of Hari as a respected and influential figure whose impact on Japanese baseball extended well beyond his own playing statistics, shaping the careers and attitudes of the generations who came after him.
