Italy Considers Fuel Bonus as Diesel Prices Rise, Especially in the South

Italy's government is examining the possibility of introducing a bonus paid directly through workers' salaries to offset persistently high fuel prices, as petrol and diesel costs remain a pressing concern nationwide.

Data from the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (Mimit) show that petrol prices remain above two euros per litre, while diesel has climbed to 2.131 euros per litre, keeping pressure on household budgets and transport costs.

The price increases have not been felt equally across the country. Diesel has risen most sharply in the Mezzogiorno, Italy's southern regions, widening the gap between fuel costs there and in the rest of the nation.

Amid the debate over how to respond, discussion has also turned to a potential extra profits tax on energy companies, targeting the additional earnings they generate when fuel prices spike. However, critics have described such a measure as a 'boomerang tax', warning that it risks producing effects opposite to those intended, potentially discouraging investment or being passed on to consumers rather than easing costs.

As an alternative to short-term fiscal interventions, attention has been drawn to biofuels as part of a longer-term energy strategy. Biofuels, derived from organic or plant-based sources rather than crude oil, are being promoted as a way to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. According to the figures cited, Italy would need to reach a production or usage target of around 5 million tonnes of biofuels by 2030 to make meaningful progress toward this goal.

The discussion reflects a broader tension in Italian energy policy between measures designed to provide immediate relief to consumers, such as a pay bonus, and structural reforms aimed at transforming the country's fuel supply over the coming years. No final decisions have yet been confirmed regarding either the bonus or the proposed tax measures, leaving both options under continued review by policymakers.
