Home Runs Fall at Japan's Summer High School Baseball Tournament
Listen to the story
Koshien, Japan's most celebrated high school baseball tournament, is held twice a year, in spring and summer, and remains a national institution watched closely by fans across the country.
This year's summer edition has drawn attention for an unusually low number of home runs. With only seven recorded so far, the tournament is on track to potentially set a record for the fewest home runs in its history.
The games have also featured a notably high number of errors, with 117 recorded, prompting concern among commentators about the overall standard of play.
A veteran figure in Japanese baseball has publicly criticized what he sees as a decline in the level of high school baseball. He questioned whether players comparable to Kiyohara and Matsui, two of the sport's most legendary former stars, will emerge again.
In addition to concerns about playing standards, the veteran also addressed issues surrounding coaching. He referenced accusations of power harassment against some coaches, a term describing abusive behavior by those in positions of authority over subordinates.
He further argued that excessive involvement from parents in team affairs has contributed to a decline in coaching quality, suggesting that this interference undermines coaches' ability to do their jobs effectively.
The low home run total carries historical significance. If the summer tournament finishes with fewer home runs than the spring tournament, it would mark only the second such occurrence since metal bats were introduced in 1974, and just the second time in 52 years overall.
The combination of declining home run numbers, rising error counts, and public criticism from a respected figure has intensified debate about the direction of high school baseball in Japan, a sport with deep cultural significance and a long history of producing professional stars.
