Heavy Monsoon Rain Traps Workers in Tunnel, Floods Ghats in India

Heavy monsoon rainfall has triggered serious disruption across several parts of India, with two separate incidents highlighting the scale of the crisis.

In Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, a construction tunnel was inundated with water, leaving 18 labourers trapped inside. The exact cause of the flooding and the current rescue status have not been detailed.

Meanwhile, in Kashi, commonly known as Varanasi, rising river waters have submerged the city's famous ghats, forcing grieving families to wait for hours before they can carry out funerals and cremations along the riverbank.

The IMD, India's national weather agency, has issued a stark alert warning that 15 states could experience intense rainfall within the next 20 hours, accompanied by winds reaching speeds of up to 70 kilometres per hour.

Such wind speeds are strong enough to damage structures, uproot trees, and disrupt transport, adding to the risks already posed by flooding.

States named in the nationwide alert include Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi, though several other regions are also expected to see substantial rainfall in the coming hours.

This surge in rainfall is part of the broader monsoon pattern that affects most of India each year, typically bringing essential water for agriculture but also carrying the risk of flash floods, landslides, and infrastructure damage when rainfall becomes excessive.

The situation in Chamoli and Varanasi illustrates how the same weather system can create very different but equally serious challenges: one involving the safety of trapped workers, and the other involving the dignity of families trying to bid farewell to the deceased.

Local authorities are expected to be coordinating rescue efforts for the tunnel workers, while officials in Varanasi may need to manage the flow of people at flooded ghats until water levels recede.

As the IMD's alert suggests, the coming hours are likely to bring further heavy rain to a wide swathe of the country, and residents in the named states have been urged to remain cautious and follow any safety instructions issued by local authorities.
