Listen to the story

A massive grassland fire in Mongolia has destroyed an area more than twice the size of Tokyo, prompting a response from Japanese telecommunications company KDDI.

KDDI operates in Mongolia in partnership with a local firm called Movicom. Following the fire, an executive from the Japanese company issued a public apology, stating that KDDI is treating the matter with great seriousness.

The scale of the destruction has drawn significant media attention in Japan, where the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper interviewed KDDI about the circumstances surrounding the blaze.

At a press briefing, a reporter pressed the executive on whether the fire might have started because someone was trying to catch an Amur taimen, a large predatory fish native to rivers in the region and prized among anglers.

The KDDI representative did not provide a definitive explanation for the fire's cause, though the company has acknowledged the need to investigate further.

In its statement, KDDI said it intends to collaborate with Movicom on measures to prevent a recurrence of such incidents, though specific details of these measures have not yet been disclosed.

The incident has highlighted broader questions about the environmental responsibilities of Japanese companies operating abroad, particularly in regions with sensitive or protected ecosystems.

Mongolia's grasslands, known as steppes, are vital habitats for wildlife and are also used for traditional nomadic herding. Large-scale fires in such regions can have long-lasting ecological and economic consequences for local communities.

As of now, no information has been released regarding casualties, specific financial losses, or a confirmed timeline for the fire's origin and spread. Journalists and local authorities are reportedly continuing to examine the matter, with further updates expected as KDDI's investigation progresses alongside its Mongolian partner.
