Giants Release Six Players, Including 2022 Top Draft Pick Asano
Listen to the story
The Yomiuri Giants have released six players from their roster, including outfielder Shogo Asano, who was the team's first overall draft pick in 2022, according to Sports Hochi.
Asano, who underwent surgery on his right knee in August, is expected to be offered a development contract, a secondary-tier deal that Japanese baseball clubs typically use for injured or developing players who are not placed on the active first-team roster.
The other players likely to be given the same offer include infielder Ryuji Kitaura and outfielder Yamato Suzuki, among others named in the report. Their release does not necessarily mean the end of their time with the Giants, as development contracts allow players to remain in the organisation while they recover or work on their skills.
In contrast, pitcher Dai Yuasa was issued a formal notice of release without any indication that a new contract would follow, suggesting his departure from the club is final.
The announcement comes just two days after Hideki Matsui, a former Giants and New York Yankees star, was named the team's new manager in what was described as a sudden appointment. His arrival appears to have triggered a broader reshuffling of the roster as the club looks ahead to the next season.
It is standard practice in Japanese professional baseball, known as Nippon Professional Baseball, for teams to finalise release and re-signing decisions in the off-season, particularly following a change in coaching staff. Clubs often use development contracts to retain promising or recovering players at reduced cost while giving themselves flexibility to build a competitive roster.
With Matsui now in charge, attention will turn to how he reshapes the Giants' lineup and which of the released players, if any, return under new terms. The club has not yet confirmed whether Asano, Kitaura, and Suzuki will accept development contract offers if made.
