Listen to the story

A growing number of French retirees are choosing to spend their retirement in Morocco, citing lower living costs and a more active lifestyle. Among them are Alain and Christelle, a couple who now live on a combined monthly budget of 2,500 euros. They say they did not retire simply to sit and do crossword puzzles while waiting to grow old, preferring instead to remain engaged and mobile.

Another retiree, René, has taken this further by travelling across Morocco in a camper van. He explains that in France he regularly took medication for rheumatism, a condition that causes joint and muscle pain. Since moving to Morocco, he says the consistently sunny climate has eliminated his need for such treatment altogether.

Other French retirees have made more substantial financial commitments to settle in the North African country. One couple, for example, invested 45,000 euros in a mobile home near the coastal city of Agadir, where they now spend extended periods throughout the year, splitting their time between France and Morocco.

These individual stories point to a broader trend in which French retirees are increasingly looking beyond their home country for retirement destinations that offer both financial and physical benefits. A significantly lower cost of living in Morocco compared to France remains a key draw, allowing retirees to maintain a comfortable lifestyle on a modest pension.

The country's warm, sunny climate is another major factor, with several retirees reporting improvements in their health, particularly regarding conditions linked to cold or damp weather. For some, such as Alain and Christelle, the decision is also rooted in a desire to avoid what they view as a passive, uneventful retirement spent indoors.

Property investment, whether in mobile homes, apartments or other forms of accommodation, has become increasingly common among this demographic, reflecting a long-term commitment to life in Morocco rather than a temporary holiday arrangement. As more retirees share similar experiences, Morocco appears to be establishing itself as a notable destination for French citizens seeking an alternative, more affordable, and arguably more active approach to retirement.
