Listen to the story

A Japanese liver surgeon has issued a public warning about a widely consumed drink, arguing that it appears harmless but poses serious risks to health. Although commonly seen as an ordinary part of daily life in Japan, the drink is, according to the surgeon, a leading example of a beverage that looks safe on the surface while causing hidden harm.

The surgeon explained that the drink consists of more than 90 percent of an extremely potent substance that is strongly associated with fatty liver disease, a condition in which excess fat accumulates in liver tissue and gradually impairs its function. Over time, this damage can affect the body's ability to filter toxins and process nutrients properly.

He noted that many people in Japan consume the drink frequently and in large quantities, often without understanding the potential consequences. This lack of awareness, he suggested, is partly due to the drink's reputation as a familiar, unremarkable choice rather than something requiring caution.

The surgeon contrasted this situation with practices abroad, where similar drinks are frequently subject to additional taxation and strict limits on advertising. Such measures are designed to discourage excessive consumption and reduce public exposure to marketing that might otherwise encourage overuse.

By comparison, regulatory oversight in Japan remains comparatively limited, with fewer financial disincentives and advertising restrictions than in many other countries. This gap, the surgeon argued, may contribute to higher rates of consumption and, potentially, to greater rates of alcohol-related liver damage.

Through his warning, the surgeon hopes to encourage greater public understanding of the risks associated with this seemingly ordinary drink. He emphasized that raising awareness could help individuals make more informed decisions about their own consumption habits, ultimately supporting better long-term liver health across the population.
