All 16 Teams Set for Koshien Baseball Last-16 Round

The field for the last 16 has been finalised at Japan's national high school baseball championship, held annually at Koshien Stadium. The tournament, one of the country's most closely watched sporting events, has produced a notably regional distribution of remaining teams.

Of the 16 schools advancing, five represent the Kanto region, three come from Tohoku, and another three are from Kinki. Kyushu, by contrast, has only a single representative remaining, Ariake, which is the sole team from that region to reach the knockout stage.

In a striking development, every one of the 16 remaining teams is a private institution, a situation that has occurred only twice in the tournament's long history. The trend has fuelled ongoing discussion about the growing dominance of private schools in Japanese high school baseball.

Among the results, Yokohama secured a decisive victory, breaking the game open with a concentrated burst of scoring in the later innings.

Nichinan Gakuen, meanwhile, endured a more difficult contest. The team managed to draw level with their opponents at one stage, keeping their hopes alive. However, their offensive momentum was repeatedly undermined by four double plays over the course of the game, a costly pattern that ultimately proved decisive in their defeat.

Following the loss, Nichinan Gakuen player Taniguchi addressed reporters. Despite his team's elimination from the tournament, he struck a positive tone, reflecting on the effort and experience gained from the campaign.

With the last-16 lineup now confirmed, attention turns to the coming rounds, where the remaining private schools will compete for a place in the tournament's later stages. The unusual concentration of private institutions this year has already made the tournament a talking point beyond the results on the field.
