Yokohama High School Starts Left-Hander, Not Star Pitcher, at Koshien

Yokohama High School played a game at the Koshien tournament, Japan's famous national high school baseball competition.

Coach Hiroaki Murata decided to start left-handed pitcher Tetsusaburo Kobayashi, who can throw the ball at about 150 kilometers per hour.

This was a surprise, because Yokohama also has another strong pitcher, Shoki Oda.

Oda is considered a top draft candidate, meaning professional baseball teams are expected to choose him soon.

However, Oda did not start the game. Instead, he began on the bench, ready to play later if needed.

Coach Murata explained his decision by saying it would be "difficult to win with only Oda."

Yokohama's opponent in this match was Nichinan Gakuen High School.

Nichinan Gakuen's coach, Kanagawa, spoke confidently before the game.

He said, "We are all high school students," meaning his team has a real chance to win, even against a strong opponent like Yokohama.

This game was one of the highlighted matches on the tenth day of the summer Koshien tournament.

Koshien is extremely popular in Japan. Many talented young pitchers who play there later become professional players.
