Spain Confirms Long Weekend for All Saints' Day
Listen to the story
Spain's official state gazette, the BOE, has confirmed a new long weekend for workers this November. The holiday falls on a Monday, creating a three-day break.
The holiday is All Saints' Day, celebrated on November 2 in Spain. Because it falls on a Monday this year, it creates what Spanish people call a puente, meaning a long weekend caused by a holiday close to the weekend.
However, not all workers in Spain will enjoy this extra day off. Spain is divided into 17 autonomous regions, and each one can decide some of its own public holidays.
According to the report, only 9 regions will mark November 2 as an official holiday. Workers in these areas will get three full days of rest.
The other 10 regions have decided not to take this holiday on a Monday. This means workers there will not receive the extra day off, even though All Saints' Day is traditionally observed across the country.
This kind of regional difference is common in Spain. Each region sometimes replaces national holidays with local ones, depending on its own calendar and traditions.
A puente is popular among Spanish workers because it offers a chance to travel, rest, or spend time with family without needing to use vacation days.
The BOE plays an important role in Spain by officially publishing laws, rules, and confirmed holiday dates. Once something appears in the BOE, it becomes legally official.
For now, workers in the 9 regions celebrating the holiday can look forward to a well-deserved three-day break at the start of November.
