Listen to the story

Scotland's household recycling rate has fallen to its lowest level in five years, according to new data.

The figures come from Sepa, Scotland's environmental regulator, which monitors how waste is managed across the country.

Sepa reported that households recycled 42.8% of their waste in 2025. This is down from 44.3% the previous year.

The drop means fewer materials, such as paper, plastic, and glass, were reused instead of being thrown away.

Recycling is important because it reduces the amount of rubbish sent to landfill and helps protect the environment.

A lower recycling rate can mean more waste ends up being burned or buried, which can harm nature and release harmful gases.

Sepa did not explain in this report why the rate has fallen. However, the figures show a clear decline over the past year.

This is the lowest recycling rate Scotland has recorded in five years, raising concerns among environmental groups.

Scotland has previously set goals to increase recycling and reduce waste, as part of wider efforts to fight climate change.

It is not yet clear whether the government or local councils will take new steps to reverse this downward trend.
