Listen to the story

State Bank of India (SBI), the country's largest lender, has announced strong financial results for the second quarter.

The bank's standalone profit rose 14% year-on-year, reaching Rs 23,038 crore.

Standalone profit refers to the bank's own earnings, not including subsidiaries or joint companies.

SBI's net interest income (NII) also grew, jumping 15% compared to the same period last year.

NII is the difference between what a bank earns from loans and what it pays on deposits. A rise in NII usually means stronger core banking business.

The results were released during a busy period for Indian companies, as many firms report their Q2 earnings around this time.

Other companies announcing results included Bajaj Finserv, Pfizer, Solar Industries, Rane (Madras), Yatharth, Emcure Pharma, and Zydus Wellness, all of which saw profit increases.

However, AIA Engineering reported a decline in profit.

Several other major firms, including NSE, Fortis, Bajaj Holdings, Lloyds Metals, Lupin, and MCX, were also expected to announce their earnings soon.

Investors closely watch these quarterly results to judge how companies are performing financially.

Strong earnings, like SBI's, often boost investor confidence and can influence stock prices.

As India's biggest public sector bank, SBI's performance is seen as an important indicator of the broader banking sector's health.
