Russia Demands EU Lift Sanctions on Russian Businessmen

As the war in Ukraine continues, Russia has demanded that the European Union lift sanctions against Russian businessmen. Sanctions are penalties, often affecting money and travel, used to pressure a country or its citizens. Russia specifically wants sanctions removed for oligarchs Alicher Ousmanov and Michael Fridman, as well as all other Russian businessmen currently on the EU list.

Meanwhile, France and Luxembourg have already succeeded in getting two Russian oligarchs removed from the EU's sanctions list. This happened as part of a wider compromise among EU member states. A compromise is an agreement where each side gives up something to reach a decision. The EU regularly reviews and updates its sanctions against Russia because of the ongoing war.

However, not all EU countries agreed with this compromise. Latvia blocked a broader European agreement on Russia sanctions, showing that member states do not always share the same view on how to handle Russian individuals and companies.

Some countries favour easing certain sanctions in exchange for other measures, while others, like Latvia in this case, resist such changes.
