Listen to the story

Algeria's weather service has announced that 22 regions of the country will receive rain this week. The rain is expected to come with thunderstorms, which bring loud noise and flashes of light in the sky.

According to the forecast, the rain will fall mainly on Thursday and Friday. In some areas, up to 40 millimetres of rain could fall, which is a fairly large amount for just two days.

At the same time, a heat wave is expected to affect several other regions of the country. This means that while some areas will have wet, stormy weather, others will experience unusually hot and dry conditions.

Such contrasting weather is common in Algeria because the country covers a large area, from the Mediterranean coast in the north to the desert in the south. Weather can therefore be very different from one region to another on the same day.

Authorities usually advise people in areas facing thunderstorms to be careful of strong winds, lightning, and possible flooding, especially in low-lying areas. Meanwhile, people in regions affected by the heat wave are often told to drink plenty of water and avoid direct sun during the hottest hours of the day.

Weather reports like this one help farmers, travellers, and local authorities prepare for changing conditions. Sudden rain after dry weather can sometimes cause problems on roads, so drivers are also advised to take extra care during storms.
