Listen to the story

The NFL, America's top American football league, has announced that it is ending the Pro Bowl Games. This decision comes after years of changing the event's format.

The Pro Bowl has traditionally been a way to honor the league's best players each season. In recent years, the NFL replaced the classic all-star game with other activities, including flag football matches and skills competitions. Flag football is a non-contact version of the sport. These additions were meant to make the event more exciting, but the format changed so often that it became beleaguered, meaning it faced constant problems and criticism.

Now, the NFL has decided to stop both the flag football games and the skills competitions completely. This effectively brings the modern Pro Bowl Games era to a close.

Despite ending the event itself, the league will still choose the best players of the season. Only the original 88 selected players will officially receive Pro Bowl status. This means they will still be recognized as Pro Bowl players, even though there will not be a live all-star game.

These honored players will be celebrated during Super Bowl week, which will take place in Los Angeles. The Super Bowl is the NFL's championship game and its biggest event of the year, so hosting the honor during that week ensures the players still get major recognition.
