Listen to the story

A statewide bandh, or shutdown, took place across Karnataka, a state in southern India, over the long-running Cauvery row.

The Cauvery is a major river whose water is shared between Karnataka and a neighbouring state. Disagreements over how the water should be shared have caused tension for many years, and this dispute has led to protests before.

Despite the shutdown, Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport remained fully operational, according to reports. Bengaluru, the state capital and Karnataka's biggest city, was largely unaffected by the bandh overall.

Ahead of a planned rally, activist Vatal Nagaraj was detained by police. He is a well-known figure who has organised protests linked to the Cauvery issue before.

Meanwhile, in the city of Belagavi, local Kannada organisations announced that there would be no bandh there on Thursday, showing that support for the shutdown was not the same everywhere in the state.

The bandh reflects continuing frustration in Karnataka over the water-sharing dispute, even though its impact appeared limited in the state's main city.
