Italy to Refund Car Tax for Some Electric Vehicle Owners
Listen to the story
Italy's annual budget law, known as the manovra, will bring a new refund for car owners starting in 2027.
The refund applies to the bollo auto, the yearly tax that car owners in Italy must pay.
Under the new rule, drivers can receive a refund of up to 386 euros. This applies to certain electric vehicles rated at more than 80 kW, a unit used to measure engine power.
Previously, only electric cars with power under 80 kW benefited from a full exemption, meaning their owners did not have to pay the tax at all.
The new measure extends financial relief to owners of more powerful electric cars, who were not covered by the earlier exemption.
Many Italians pay the car tax automatically through a direct debit linked to their bank account.
Officials have warned that owners of cars under 80 kW, who already enjoy the exemption, should not cancel this direct debit.
This is because tax authorities still need time to confirm each driver's exempt status in their records before stopping payments.
Cancelling the direct debit too early could cause problems, such as missed payments or administrative errors, before the system is fully updated.
The changes form part of a wider package of measures in the government's upcoming budget law, aimed at supporting the shift toward electric vehicles in Italy.
Full details on eligibility and how drivers can claim the refund are expected to be published closer to 2027, when the measure takes effect.
